From the desk of Estacada Area Food Bank
Executive Director, Phyllis Varnell
“The cost of providing fresh produce is one of our major
expenses.”
Last year the food bank provided 154,000 pounds of dairy,
meat, canned goods and produce for hungry people in the
three communities of Estacada, Eagle Creek and Colton.
Because the bank is operated solely by non-paid
volunteers and because many people and organizations
donate food, the cost was only $42,000. However, the price
of food is rapidly rising and officials are concerned about
being able to keep up with the need.
“If even one-tenth of the gardeners in the community
planted an extra row for the food bank, a lot of produce
would be available for people in need”, said Varnell.
The food bank is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 AM
to 3:45 PM.
